A to Z Empire

world.png
I would like to offer an apology to those who have felt the global military presence of the United States since 1945. Whether it was to "protect American interests", "bring democracy" or just to intimidate others into a system of waste and greed. I'm sure YOU know who you are, but for those who don't..........

Afghanistan/ Greece / Philippines
Albania / Grenada / Puerto Rico
Angola / Guatemala / Saychelles
Argentina / Haiti / Somalia
Bangladesh / Honduras / South Africa
Bolivia / Indonesia/ Sudan
Brazil / Iran / Surinam
British Guyana/ Iraq / Syria
Bulgaria / Italy / Thailand
Cambodia / Jamaica / Afghanistan
Chile / Kashmir / Uganda
China / Korea / Uruguay
Congo / Laos / Veitnam
Costa Rica / Lebanon / Yugoslavia
Cuba / Liberia / Zaire
Dominican Republic / Libya /
East Timor/ Morocco /
Ecuador/ Nicaragua /
Egypt / Pakistan /
El Salvador / Panama /
Ghana / Peru/
I apologize to any countries, other than these 57, that have dealt with our soldiers. This list continues to grow, apparently, without the knowledge of the U.S. public, who seem to ignore the terror that our government's military historically and presently implement. Perhaps it is the constant onslaught of violence and abuse of governmental power here in our own country that is meant to stray our attention from your plight.
This abuse of human rights binds us together. I still see people behind flags, not terrorists. I still see families beyond borders, not a never ending war. I still see the good in myself and others.

Martin Luther King's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech

Martin Luther King's
Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech

December 10, 1964
Oslo, Norway

I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when twenty-two million Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice. I accept this award in behalf of a civil rights movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice.

I am mindful that only yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, our children, crying out for brotherhood, were answered with fire hoses, snarling dogs and even death. I am mindful that only yesterday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, young people seeing to secure the right to vote were brutalized and murdered. And only yesterday more than 40 houses of worship in the State of Mississippi alone were bombed or burned because they offered a sunctuary to those who would not accept segregation.

I am mindful that debilitating and grinding poverty afflicts my people and chains them to the lowest rung of the economic ladder.

Therefore, I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle; to a movement which has not won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize.

After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time -- the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression.

Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts. Negroes of the United States, following the people of India, have demonstrated that nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation. Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.

If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. The tortuous road which has led from Montgomery, Alabama, to Oslo bears witness to this truth. This is a road over which millions of Negroes are travelling to find a new sense of dignity.

This same road has opened for all Americans a new ear of progress and hope. It has led to a new Civil Rights bill, and it will, I am convinced, be widened and lengthened into a superhighway of justice as Negro and white men in increasing numbers create alliances to overcome their common problems.

I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the "isness" of man's present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal "oughtness" that forever confronts him.

I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsom and jetsom in the river of life unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.

I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of thermonuclear destruction. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.

I believe that even amid today's motor bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for a brighter tomorrow. I believe that wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowing streets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men.

I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up. I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive goodwill will proclaim the rule of the land.

"And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together and every man shall sit under his own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid."

I still believe that we shall overcome.

This faith can give us courage to face the uncertainties of the future. It will give our tired feet new strength as we continue our forward stride toward the city of freedom. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds and our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, we will know that we are living in the creative turmoil of a genuine civilization struggling to be born.

Today I come to Oslo as a trustee, inspired and with renewed dedication to humanity. I accept this prize on behalf of all men who love peace and brotherhood. I say I come as a trustee, for in the depths of my heart I am aware that this prize is much more than an honor to me personally.

Every time I take a flight I am always mindful of the man people who make a successful journey possible -- the known pilots and the unknown ground crew.

So you honor the dedicated pilots of our struggle who have sat at the controls as the freedom movement soared into orbit. You honor, once again, Chief (Albert) Luthuli of South Africa, whose struggles with and for his people, are still met with the most brutal expression of man's inhumanity to man.

You honor the ground crew without whose labor and sacrifices the jet flights to freedom could never have left the earth.

Most of these people will never make the headlines and their names will not appear in Who's Who. Yet when years have rolled past and when the blazing light of truth is focused on this marvelous age in which we live -- men and women will know and children will be taught that we have a finer land, a better people, a more noble civilization -- because these humble children of God were willing to suffer for righteousness' sake.

I think Alfred Nobel would know what I mean when I say that I accept this award in the spirit of a curator of some precious heirloom which he holds in trust for its true owners -- all those to whom beauty is truth and truth beauty -- and in whose eyes the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.

-MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Terrorism

By Dan Matthews

TERRORISM: the systematic use of terror, violence, and intimidation to achieve an end.
AMERICAN HERITAGE DICTIONARY, second college edition

This country was founded on a terrorist act

Packed together with the bonds of greed

Freedom the mask worn by the bandits

Habit seems hard to break

Terrorists wage war every evening

Bringing images of fear into millions

Of dimly lit outlooks

“Two more dead of ….

It’s a terrorist plot when the have not’s

Decide they no longer like the rules

Fools, haven’t they heard of trade embargo’s?

Millions dead without a bullet

Right now the terrorists are busy

Fighting the terrorists

Where do we stand?

Are you standing?

B is for bourgeoisie

manwomancomputer.jpg

Does your father drift from one hobby to another, fruitlessly seeking a meaningful way to spend the little "leisure time" he gets off from work? Does your mother endlessly redecorate the house, going from one room to the next until she can start over at the beginning again? Do you agonize constantly over your future, as if there was some kind of track laid out ahead of you - and the world would end if you turned it off?
If the answer to these questions is yes, you're in the clutches of the bourgeoisie, and you're helping destroy the world!!!

How does public opinion support this hollow and sterile exisitence?

Public opinion is an absolute value to the bourgeois man and woman because they know they are living in a herd: a herd of scared animals, that will turn on anyone it doesn't recognize as its own. They shiver in fear as they ponder what "the neighbors" will think of their son's new hairstyle. They plot ways to seem even more normal than their friends and coworkers. They don't dare fail to turn on their lawn sprinklers or dress appropriately for "casual Fridays" at the office. Anything that could drag them out of their routines is viewed as suspect at best. Love and lust are both diseases, possibly fatal, as are all the other passions that could drive one to do things that would result in expulsion from the flock. Keep them quarantined to secret affairs and teenage dates, to night clubs and strip clubs - for God's sake, don't contaminate the rest of us. Go wild when "your" football team wins a game, drink yourself into oblivion when the weekend comes, rent obscene movies if you have to, but don't dare sing or run or make love out here. Under no circumstance admit to feeling anything that doesn't belong in the staff room or at the dinner party. Under no conditions admit to wanting anything more or different that what "everyone else" wants, whatever that might be.

B is for bourgeoisie part 2

1effective6-thumb.jpg

The bourgeois man depends upon the existence of a mythical mainstream to justify his way of life. He needs this mainstream because his social instincts are skewed in the same way his conception of democracy is: he thinks that whatever the majority is, wants and does, must be right. Nothing could be more terrifying to him than this new development, that he is beginning to sense: there is no longer a majority, if one ever was.

Our society is so fragmented, so diverse, that at this point it is absurd to speak of a "mainstream". This is a myth partly created by the anonymity of our cities. Almost everyone passed on the street is a stranger and one mentally relegates these anonymous figures to the faceless mass one calls the mainstream, to which one attributes whatever properties one thinks of strangers as possessing (for the smug salesman, they all envy him for being even more respectable than they are; for the insecure bohemian rebel, they must disapprove of him for not being like them). They must be part of a silent majority, that invisible force that makes everything the way it is; one assumes that they are the same "normal people" seen in television commericals. But, the fact is, of course, that those commericals refer to an unattainable ideal in order to keep everyone feeling left out and insufficient. The "mainstream" is analogus to this ideal, as it keeps everyone in line without actually making an appearance, and possesses the same degree of reality as the perfect family in the toothpaste advertisement.

No one worries more about this absent mass than the bohemian childern of the bourgeoisie. They bicker over how to orchestrate their protest to gain "mass appeal" for their radical ideas, as if there still was a mass to appeal to!!! Their society is now made up of many communities, and the only question is which communities they should approach.... And dressing "nice," proper language and all, is probably NOT the best way to appeal to the most potentially revolutiuonary elements of their society. "Dressing up" in conventional bourgeoisie clothing for demonstrations and political events is probably just the spectre of their bourgeois parents, engraved deep in their collective unconscious (collective psychosis) as a symbol of the adolescent insecurity and guilt they never got over. They would do better to cut their ties to the bourgeoisie entirely by feeling free to act, look, and speak in whatever ways are pleasurable, no matter who is watching - even when they are trying to advance some political cause: for no political objective reached by activists in camouflage could be more important than beginning the struggle towards a world in which people will not have to disguise themselves to be taken seriously.

Jesus Backs Bush in '04

bush under jesus

Heaven - Jesus H. Christ, reportedly drunk on water turned wine, announced his support for the presidential election. "He's the only one that seems to be listening to what I've got to say," said Christ early Tuesday morning.
"I've spoken with Ashcroft, and I've been in a losing battling for Rumsfeld's soul, but this young man, he just listens and follows what I say, and you gotta love that!"
When asked about possible democratic candidates, Jesus scoffed, "Those goofballs? I don't need any of those dimwits screwing up my word. Pro-choice, keeping the 10 commandments out of the schools, gay marriage, thanks but no thanks!!"

Jesus spoke with NBC's Matt Lauer on NBC's Today show. He said he will donate 15 billion dollars through small $2,000 donations in the name of those in heaven. "You gotta love America™" read the T-shirt Christ wore on the show.

Making a killing

coffin.jpg

How does it feel to never be treated like an adult? To never be free of rules and regulations put upon you "for your own good," to have to obey and grovel before teachers, bosses, policemen - because they serve masters who have more money and power over your life than you can ever hope to achieve? To have to beg and scheme and lie for an afternoon "off" to do what you want, for once? To answer to automated bells, to be at the mercy of machines and clocks and people with half your brains and personality, to be dressed in matching uniforms like identical bags of potato chips? To be required to recite standard phrases over and over all day - to be programmed like a machine?

Every time I get home to find my mailbox filled with junk mail, every time I try to eat a quiet dinner and get interrupted by a phone call from a telemarketing company, I'm reminded that we live in a society that values sales more than privacy. Every time someone has a television on and a barrage of commericals assults us, I remember how little truth and quiet reflection matter to the merchants out to make a "killing."

What is Anarchy?

grenade.jpg

Realization that this is it, life. You are born and you will die. This is the only thing you can count on. The current way of existing that we are operating under is the ticking time bomb. Human life with its beginnings and endings is a ticking time bomb. To live free we would need to take control of the way we live our lives, rather than following the herd to the death machine of capitalism and exploitation. Anarchism is a way of living that means trying to figure out how to work together to meet our needs rather than for or against each other. It means refusing to put the responsibility for your happiness into anyone else's hands. Taking the meaning and joy of life into your own hands. Anarchism means no gods and no masters.

War President or AWOL Coward?

".....Calling himself a 'war president', Bush said he expected the 2004 election to be fought over 'who can properly use American power'." He defended his actions regarding economic growth and the budget deficit. He said his "biggest disappointment" in office is that he is perceived as dividing the country rather than uniting it. Using many of the same lines he employs in stump speeches, Bush repeated assertions that the Iraq war was justified regardless of what weapons are found there.
Bush's promise to release all of his military files, including pay stubs and tax records, has potential to resolve the long debate about his service from May 1972 to May 1973. No records have been found indicating that he performed his duties during that period, but he received an honorable discharge, indicating he had served properly.
Experts in such matters have said payroll records and Bush's annual retirement "point summary" from the time - neither of which has been uncovered so far - should demonstrate definitively how often Bush participated in drills. Such records, unless they have been purged, should exist on microfiche in St. Louis or Denver.
Bush said it was unlikely those records still exist. Asked if he would allow their release, he replied, "Yeah, if we still have them. But, you know the records are kept in Colorado, as I understand, and they scoured the records." Bush also said his campaign had authorized the release of such information in the 2000 campaign, but no such information has been released."

Use Your Head

This is a call to anyone who feels like we're in suspended animation; to those of us who think that the government has finally taken over our inalienable rights and replaced them with their version of democracy; and to those who think that they are powerless to fight them and want to take all their anger and resentment and filter it out into society. To them I say:
Stop it now!
Or, at least take a break and munch on a Big Mac, ha ha.

Freedom comes at a much larger cost than one might think, yet that doesn't validate resentment or anger towards the people who are screwing the world: Neocons, the Right wing machine, TV, McDonald's, etc. We have no excuse to not be making logical, informed and mature decisions about how we channel our feelings.
We all know this country is screwing up the world, and everyday when the president says that 'things are going great and order some gol-darn ribs', the skies just seem to get darker and cloudier. I know, I know. We have learned about freaky things this mechanized, industrialized society does. We have learned about what is REALLY in our fast food. We know all about the Neocons' takeover policies. It can be overwhelming, but we need to keep our wits about us in order to make a dent. If we collectively use our anger and resentment to get back at this unfair world, what kind of happiness will it bring? It won't bring any happiness- rather, it will only bring shame and depression. How do you react to negativity? With more or less negativity? Will you be reactionary or will you act accordingly and adult about it?

We know that the media encourages people to be a certain way. We know this because we see it in the gallery malls in every major city, including this one. We see people's intelligence shafted for commercialized, generalized knowledge. We see how aspects of intellectualism, artistry, sensitivity and tact are replaced with pseudospeak, which in turn, is prioritized. It's more custom to hear whatever this neo-ebonics is (actually, it seems more like a degredation of language to me). The media tries to pop our heads open and pour it in, preaching "Walk in the valley of victory with me". Should we hate the media or should we hate those people who emulate the media as such? What do you think?

Or, should we not hate at all? NOT HATE?! That's un-American! We were BORN TO HATE! Our country was conceived out of hate! That's the American Way!

(Now picture a bugle call and a slowly waving Old Glory, ha ho.)

I don't think so.
Humanity needs to be careful and listen carefully. I think if anything in our world view or even our local view gets askew enough to start breeding hatred towards the people who are raping the world, then we'd better get on their bandwagon and become one of them. We ought to be constructive about the things in this world that piss us off. In my opinion, we need to love people for their shortcomings and try to understand them better, and either do nothing or do something constructive to fix the problem. Sound preachy? Sound like bullshit or Jesus-jargon? It's the TRUTH. We were all born to hate the 'other'- the black man, the Japanese, the women, the Iraqis, the fast food eaters, the yuppies, the trustafarians, the conservatives, the neocons and on and on.

And I believe this is why:

It's hard to know everyday that there are people out there who want to make life harder for us. It's hard to understand that there are people out there who want to be the ultimate paradigm kind of staus-quo; or they want to be the fish at the bottom of the barrell. It's difficult to swallow the fact that there are so many people out there who don't give a fuck about the economy or the poor because they've got their nice tax breaks and their nice suits and their nice Range Rovers and a mouth full of McNugs. It's painful to watch anyone who consumes the bottom-barrel fast foods and their idealism that is seemingly being shoved down the throats of our minds in relentless advertisements. If all that makes you pissed off, then you're definitely paying attention.
But, if we redistribute anger into the world, we'd only be feeding the fire. Lots of things are so bad right now it's almost like a new breed of social anxiety is coming out: everythingitis!
I think that people have the power to react in good, understanding ways to assert the truth in our world. I think that madness breeds madness and only love can break it apart. I think that this group knows this and anyone who reads my shpiel could probably identify...but I don't know anything for sure. This world is so fucked up right now it needs love in order to break the shackles that bind us. Use your head.

"President" Bush's economic plan

Remarks by the President to the Press Pool
Nothin' Fancy Cafe
Roswell, New Mexico

11:25 A.M. MST

THE PRESIDENT: I need some ribs.

Q Mr. President, how are you?

THE PRESIDENT: I'm hungry and I'm going to order some ribs.

Q What would you like?

THE PRESIDENT: Whatever you think I'd like.

Q Sir, on homeland security, critics would say you simply haven't spent enough to keep the country secure.

THE PRESIDENT: My job is to secure the homeland and that's exactly what we're going to do. But I'm here to take somebody's order. That would be you, Stretch -- what would you like? Put some of your high-priced money right here to try to help the local economy. You get paid a lot of money, you ought to be buying some food here. It's part of how the economy grows. You've got plenty of money in your pocket, and when you spend it, it drives the economy forward. So what would you like to eat?

Q Right behind you, whatever you order.

THE PRESIDENT: I'm ordering ribs. David, do you need a rib?

Q But Mr. President --

THE PRESIDENT: Stretch, thank you, this is not a press conference. This is my chance to help this lady put some money in her pocket. Let me explain how the economy works. When you spend money to buy food it helps this lady's business. It makes it more likely somebody is going to find work. So instead of asking questions, answer mine: are you going to buy some food?

Q Yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Okay, good. What would you like?

Q Ribs.

THE PRESIDENT: Ribs? Good. Let's order up some ribs.

Q What do you think of the democratic field, sir?

THE PRESIDENT: See, his job is to ask questions, he thinks my job is to answer every question he asks. I'm here to help this restaurant by buying some food. Terry, would you like something?

Q An answer.

Q Can we buy some questions?

THE PRESIDENT: Obviously these people -- they make a lot of money and they're not going to spend much. I'm not saying they're overpaid, they're just not spending any money.

Q Do you think it's all going to come down to national security, sir, this election?

THE PRESIDENT: One of the things David does, he asks a lot of questions, and they're good, generally.
